Out of your everyday routine, into the plane and off you go to the shopping and cultural metropolis of London. Can you do that at Easter? Definitely! The British capital is a very popular tourist destination during the holidays. The shops can decide if they open or not, which means that most shops are opened during the holidays. You can still feel a festive Easter atmosphere here. The fruit bread "Simnel Cake" is served for afternoon tea and children have fun taking part in the traditional Egg Hunting.
Why not spend the Easter days in Germany's sunniest region? We advise you to make a trip to the island and enjoy the first rays of sunshine at the beach at the Baltic Sea! The holiday season on Usedom begins at Easter and those who think there will be no Easter atmosphere at the sea are wrong. Travellers can take part in the traditional Easter bonfire at the beach and there is a wide range of activities and events for children here during the holidays. You probably feel like looking for Easter eggs in the golden sand at the Baltic Sea now. It is definitely a worthwhile experience!
Easter is one of the most important holidays of the year in Austria. There are Easter markets in all municipalities as well as in cities like Salzburg and Vienna and rural regions such as Tyrol. Easter is a special event here and is celebrated accordingly. While the Steiermark hosts the traditional Weihfeuertragen (carrying of a blessed fire), the Passionsspiele ("Passion Play", dramatic performance of the Passion of Jesus Christ) among the best-known customs in Kärnten. Children also play a major role. Which place could be more suitable for rolling Easter eggs than the Austrian Alps?
Easter is the most important festivity of the Catholic Church and the highlight of this spectacle is the annual Easter Mass in front of St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. St. Peter's Square is the most significant pilgrimage destinations at Easter for thousands of believers from all over the world. The pope gives the blessing "Urbi et Orbi" and reminds everyone of the religious origin of Easter. You find accommodation in Rome. From there, you can reach St. Peter's Square on foot. Afterwards, you should go sightseeing in Italy's capital and enjoy the Italian cuisine.
Another traditional region is Bavaria. The decoration of the wells with Easter eggs and palm branches is a symbol of fertility. It is a way of maintaining the water as a source of life. This custom is particularly common in Franconian Switzerland. However, Bavaria is not only worth a visit because of its wonderful Easter traditions but also because of the delicious food served at the occasion. Pork roast with potato dumplings and sauerkraut (pickled cabbage) is a real feast and for desert, you have sweet apricot dumplings or apple tarts. If you go on a trip to Bavaria at Easter, you should leave your scales at home.
It is an old Hungarian tradition that the boys pour a bucket of water on the girls' heads at Easter. This serves the preservation of their beauty. But there are gentler methods of doing something for your beauty in Hungary. We highly recommend a short trip to Budapest on the long Easter weekend. The city accommodates 15 different thermal and healing baths. They have an age-old tradition and offer a wholesome experience for body and mind. The most beautiful baths are the Gellért Bath, Szechenyi Bath and Király Bath.
We stay in the east of Europe and travel to the cultural capital of Prague in the Czech Republic. The old Bohemian Easter tradition comes back to life here. Three weeks before Easter Sunday, Easter egg markets all over the country, for example on Wenceslas Square and Old Town Square in Prague. Besides the city's many cultural attractions, children can paint Easter eggs, watch the rabbits at work and taste the many sweet and hearty delicacies which are sold at market stalls. There is something for every age group!
Great food, delicious wine and an environment you will feel comfortable in - that is what you find during an Easter picnic in Rhineland-Palatinate. This Easter destination too is full of traditions and customs which make the region worth a visit. The highlight during the holidays are the pilgrimage masses, which are accompanied by music and excellent wine. If you want to stay in shape during this weekend, we recommend you take part in traditional Easter customs like the "Eierlage" race in Schönecken or the Easter egg tossing in Horhausen.
We have also found an excellent destination for the active holidaymakers among yourselves. How about a climbing tour in the Swiss Alps? To preserve the Easter feeling, you can wear a pair of rabbit ears while climbing and enjoy colourfully painted Easter eggs during your lunch break. After a such a hearty meal, you definitely make your way to the peak. Once you arrive, you can try your luck at egg tapping (Eiertitschen). You probably do not have a photo which shows you celebrating Easter in the mountains yet!
Our last destination is the German capital of Berlin. Easter markets, the Oster-Ritter-Spectaculum (a spectacle involving knights' games) and Easter bonfires create Easter atmosphere in almost every district. But Berlin would not be Berlin if all the fun ended at nightfall. Easter is welcome occasion for celebrating in the capital and attracts countless party-goers. Easter parties and nights in the clubs do not begin before 1 a.m. and last at least until the early morning hours. Do not forget to bring you dancing shoes, ladies!
